Porsche Boxster
Porsche may have skipped the skipped the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, but the German automaker still has a bit of news to share with the world. Porsche announced pricing for its refreshed Boxster on Thursday, with the revised drop top listing from $46,600. The up-level Bosxster S will start from $56,700. Both prices are slight increases over the current models, but the extra cash gets you more powerful and fuel efficient engines, the new PDK dual-clutch transmission, and a revised exterior with new headlights and taillights.
The freshened exterior is highlighted by a new halogen headlight design reminiscent of the discontinued Carrera GT supercar, complete with integrated direction indicators. The taillights were also revised, integrating more elegantly to the modified rear end. Both the front and rear facias have new detailing consistent with the updated look.
The entry-level 2.9-liter motor delivers 255 horsepower — an improvement of 10 horses over its predecessor. Meanwhile, the high-performance ‘S’ model has an improved 3.4-liter engine featuring Direct Fuel Injection. The new ‘S’ mill gains 15 horsepower — now 310 — while improving fuel economy.
The new PDK transmission, available with either Boxster model, promises improved acceleration and better fuel economy. First offered on the 911 range, the PDK results in a 26.4 mpg efficiency rating for the base model — an 11 percent improvement. Meanwhile, the Boxster S delivers 25.5 mpg — 16 percent better than the 2008 model.
Acceleration to 62 mph is said to take just 4.9 seconds for the PDK Boxster S equipped with Launch Control and the Sports Chrono Package. A new suspension system promises better driving dynamics and enhanced comfort, depending on driving conditions. A modified valve control map for the steering system serves to reduce steering forces, giving the Boxster even more agile steering behaviour.
The Boxster features the latest generation of PSM Porsche Stability Management now offering two new functions: Brake Pre-Loading and the Brake Assistant. Whenever the driver lets go of the gas pedal very quickly — which is typical of an upcoming emergency braking manoeuvre — the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up an appropriate level of pressure on the wheel brakes before the driver even presses down the brake pedal, moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs for immediate action. This significantly improves brake response and shortens stopping distances accordingly. Recognizing fast operation of the brake pedal and high pressure application, the PSM hydraulic control unit actively delivers the brake pressure required for maximum stopping power.
Both Boxster models come as standard with the new CDR-30 CD radio boasting a five-inch monochromatic display and the ability to play MP3 CDs. New PCM Porsche Communication Management available as an option complete with hard disc navigation serves as the central control unit for all audio, communication and navigation features.
